How Many Spaces After A Period?

Much to my chagrin, I just found out that the way I type isn’t necessarily correct.  If you’re like me you automatically put two spaces after the end of a period.  According to this article (which references the MLA Style Guide and the Chicago Manual of Style) typographers (those people who studied and designed the typewritten word) decided long ago that one space should be the norm after a convoluted history of people putting as many or as few spaces after a period as they wanted.

That being said, if your professor tells you to use two spaces after a period, do so.  If you’re used to using two spaces, it’s your prerogative to continue – I just thought this was a fun little bit of news since I would otherwise have offered a heated argument on why 2 spaces was the RIGHT way to follow a period.

Happy writing 🙂
