The Peace Corps – Celebrating 50 Years

March 1, 2011 the Peace Corps celebrated its 50th year in existence.  It was established by John F. Kennedy as one of his first presidential acts on March 1, 1961.  Since that time more than 200,000 Americans have served in the Peace Corps in 139 countries.  If the Peace Corps is something that you’ve thought about doing or that might interest you, check out their website: http://www.peacecorps.gov/

A few “fast facts” about the Peace Corps:
– The majority of Peace Corps volunteers are women (60% female, 40% male)
– The average age of volunteers is 28
– Currently there are 77 countries being served by the Peace Corps – a majority are in Africa
