Are you a lover of science fiction? Do you find yourself wishing you had access to an online version of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction? If so, you’re in luck! The third edition of this encyclopedia is now freely available online. The first two editions were published in print (we still have the 2nd edition at the library – it can be found here) but they decided to publish the latest edition as a beta version online. They explain on the site, “[o]wing to the sheer amount of new material published since 1995, and also to the ambitious scale of our improvements to the coverage, we do not expect to complete the Third Edition before late 2012.” But this doesn’t mean there isn’t still plenty of quality information readily available right now.
The encyclopedia focuses on English-language science fiction with the ability to do a keyword search, browse by author, themes, media, awards, and more… There are 19 categories you can browse through so it’s very user-friendly.
Recently reviewed in Choice Reviews Online, reviewer R.A. Aken highly recommends the resource. Aken states: “No print or online work approaches this resource’s coverage, with its important factual information and provision of significant analysis and context.” Don’t you want to check it out!?
