April is a busy month – but one of the best parts about it is that it’s National Poetry Month! This month-long poetry celebration began in 1996 thanks to the Academy of American Poets. As they explain on the Poets.org website, the purpose of National Poetry Month is “to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern.” Not a bad goal 😉
Too often people think of poetry as either too complex and/or above them or as something meant to be sappy and sentimental. The depth and range of poetry can and will amaze you. You can find a poem that will transport you, make you laugh, bring a tear to your eye, or cause you to stop for just a moment and lose yourself in the beauty of the written word. Am I laying it on too thick? 🙂 Just give poetry a try. We’ll be linking to a “Poem-A-Day” on our Facebook page thanks to Poets.org so you can get a daily dose of poetry that way. Not to mention the fact that we have a TON of books of poetry upstairs in the library – check one (or a few!) out when you get a chance.
Happy Poetry Month!
