Award-Winning African American Authors

To celebrate Black History Month this year we decided to highlight the Coretta Scott King Awards on the library display behind the Reference Desk. The Coretta Scott King Awards are one of many awards presented each year by the American Library Association. The “about” section of the Coretta Scott King Award page explains that the awards “are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.” Those titles on display are available for check-out and you should certainly take the time to browse through them.

In addition to the Coretta Scott King Awards, we wanted to highlight a few more African American award-winning authors. A quick skim of the Newbery, Caldecott, National Book Award, and Pulitzer Prize winners lists shows a number of African American authors whose work you should find the time to read (and don’t worry – all the titles we discuss are available here in the library!).
